Over the past few years, spurred by the pandemic and the soaring cost of real estate, tens of millions of Americans desiring more space and a lower cost of living have left cities behind for wide open spaces. From New York to San Francisco, coastal residents have made their way toward the middle, settling in hot spots like Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
Instead of settling the larger metroplexes in these states, many have chosen to put their roots down in the sprawling suburbs or small towns just outside the city limits in rural communities where housing is more affordable.
While many have found a slower pace of life, they’ve also found a lack of healthcare facilities. In fact, 100+ million U.S. residents have difficulty accessing primary care, a number that has doubled since 2014. Why? Because historically, rural communities have struggled to recruit and retain healthcare professionals.
What’s missing in rural communities
Living in cities, we can often take for granted access to healthcare. Just outside the city limits, hospitals or medical centers are often out of reach for people living in rural towns. People living in small towns can often drive 20-30 miles (at minimum) for medical attention. Because of this, many suffer worse health outcomes than those living in cities.
What’s the solution?
Experts believe that medical residency training programs are the key to bridging the gap for rural residents, but 98% of programs are in cities. Even though Congress has introduced legislation to help with the shortage of rural healthcare providers and training, they have failed to gain traction.
However, what has been able to bridge the gap are Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHCs) which offer preventative health services, dental care, mental health and substance abuse services, hospice care, and more to rural populations.
How FQHCs make a difference
An FQHC is a rewarding environment because it's a place where healthcare providers take on a variety of responsibilities and treat a diverse group of patients. Not only can you expand your skill set, but you can also be instrumental in the long-term health of a community.
