Norton Sound Health Corporation

There's no place like Nome!

Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC) is a tribally owned and operated, independent, not-for profit health care organization, founded in 1970 to meet the health care needs of the Inupiat, Siberian Yup’ik and Yu’pikpeople of the Being Strait region. NSHC is governed by a 24-member board of directors who represent all communities and areas of the Bering Strait region, a 44,000 square-mile section of northwestern Alaska.

Norton Sound Health Corporation puts the patient first. This principle applies equally at the new Norton Sound Regional Hospital and at the 15 village clinics managed by NSHC.

Every day, NSHC’s approximately 500 employees – about 72% of them Alaska Native – demonstrate their commitment to our mission: providing quality health services and promoting wellness within our people and environment.

Norton Sound Health Corporation is an exciting and fulfilling place to work. You will work with a diverse and dynamic staff, all committed to delivering excellent health care with compassion, whether at the hospital in Nome or one of the village clinics. Our salaries are competitive and our benefit package is very generous.

A few benefits we offer:
- Full health benefits provided free-of-charge for provider and their family.
- Relocation assistance and sign-on bonuses available.
- Highly competitive and negotiable compensation offered.

While the majority of NSHC's 500 employees are based in Nome, many staff members regularly travel to villages to treat patients. Fifteen villages, ranging in size from 150 to 750 residents, are scattered along the Bering Sea coast and on islands of the region. Each village has a clinic staffed by local residents trained as community health aides. These front-line primary care providers are a critical link between patients and medical staff in Nome.

In larger villages, NSHC stations a physician assistant or nurse practitioner. In addition, the clinics in Shishmaref and Unalakleet also have dental health aide therapists.

Village patients requiring the next level of care are brought to Nome. In an emergency, staff fly to a village to transport the patient back to Nome or on to Anchorage for care above the level NSHC provides. The hospital in Nome does not have the capability of providing surgery, CAT scans or MRI. Patients needing this type of care are transported to Anchorage.

Nome, AK

Located on the edge of the Bering Sea on the southwest side of the Seward Peninsula, Nome is a vital hub for Northwest Alaska. The Three Lucky Swedes discovered placer gold in Anvil Creek in 1898…the rush was on! In 1899 the population of Nome swelled from a handful to 28,000. Today our population is 3,500 and there is still some gold mining happening.

Nome’s colorful Gold Rush history is set within the framework of 10,000 years of Inupiaq Eskimo history. A history of survival living a subsistence lifestyle that many live to this day underscores the vibrancy of the Eskimo culture. The culture that today manifests itself in the world’s finest ivory carving, vibrant drum/vocal music and some of the best Eskimo dancing in Alaska. The Inupiaq values of yesterday live in the people today.

Our region has 350 miles of roads that are open from mid-May until the end of October (when the snows begin to fly). Birding in Nome is excellent during the summer months with the greatest number (200 migratory species) from May 15th – June 15th and again in the fall as the cranes and swans exit. Villages on the Seward Peninsula are all accessible by local airlines and Teller accessible by our road system out of Nome. The roads also allow the traveler to get out into the spectacular tundra which beginning in June blooms with wonderful wild flowers and ends with magnificent fall colors in September and October.
