Facilities

West Oakland Health Council
700 Adeline Street, Oakland, CA 94607

(Click for details)

West Oakland, a low-income, and largely African American community lacked affordable, accessible, culturally responsive and high-quality health care services. Many residents were unable to afford care from nearby private medical practices and were forced to seek care at the county hospital, often requiring long waiting times for appointments and difficulty accessing services by public transit.

Community activists, organized and supported by four dedicated West Oakland African American women, established the West Oakland Health Council in 1967 to receive public funding and to build and staff the West Oakland Health Center.

Funding was received and services were initiated in 1969 at 700 Adeline Street. In subsequent years, as additional funding became available, the Council expanded to seven facilities serving West/North Oakland, East Oakland, Emeryville, and Berkeley.

Council services include primary medical care (general medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, and pediatrics), dentistry, optometry, mental health care for adults and children, residential and non-residential substance abuse recovery services, adult day health care, and ancillary support - including pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, health education, social services, and the W.I.C. nutritional supplement program.

The Council provides services to approximately 21,000 patients each year, through over 120,000 annual clinic patient visits.

Oakland, CA

Many of the attributes that make Oakland a Model City and a great place to live, also make the city a great place to visit! Oakland’s diverse population, hip art scene, Mediterranean climate, world-class attractions, abundant parks and open spaces, vibrant waterfront and lakefront, historic architecture, palate-tempting restaurants, bustling nightlife, action-packed pro sports and varied recreation options make for an exciting destination.

Oakland is consistently recognized as one of the most livable and sustainable cities in the nation! The City of Oakland is committed to leading Oakland's progress in becoming a more sustainable city – a community in which all people have the opportunity to pursue safe, happy, healthy and fulfilling lives, now and into the future. Protecting a clean and ecologically healthy environment; growing a strong economy brimming with opportunity; and fostering a safe, equitable and vibrant community are all critical components of this vision.

With 260 days of sunshine, miles of waterfront access and over 100,000 acres of parks and trails, it’s no wonder that Oakland is a playground for sports enthusiasts of all kinds. And you don’t have to travel far to find it—there’s a lake smack dab in the middle of the city, and a redwood forest less than 20 minutes from downtown. In Oakland, the unexpected is around every corner. Star-gazing, stand-up paddle boarding, hikes through redwood forests—in Oakland? Absolutely. Get up close and personal with more than 700 animals at the Oakland Zoo, bring out your inner science geek at Chabot Space & Science Center, and learn why Walt Disney was inspired to create Disneyland after a visit to Children’s Fairyland. Sure, it’s not what you expected.

More spectator than sporty? Oakland’s got you covered there, too. With three professional sports teams in tow, there’s a lot to cheer about. Oakland fans are a lot like the city—proud, loud and loyal. But with Oakland teams winning more playoff games and championships year to year, it just might be time to shrug off that underdog mentality.

If Brooklyn is the arts hub of the East Coast, Oakland is most definitely the arts mecca of the West. Movers and shakers are constantly pushing the boundaries, leading the way for innovation and creativity. From industrial arts to world-class museums, there’s no shortage of creative expression here. Art is a part of Oakland’s soul, and it shows.

Craft beer, creative cocktails, live music—you’ll find the full spectrum of nightlife in Oakland. Hipster heaven awaits at dive bars throughout the city, and upscale urbanites can find solace in the variety of clubs and bars. Looking for a little guidance? Sign up for a retro cocktail tour or grab a ticket to one of the shows in town. Whatever you’re up for, Oakland’s nightlife won’t disappoint.
