Crescent City, FL

It’s a little tricky getting your bearings in Crescent City. When you arrive here after driving down Highway 17, you’ll gravitate toward the waterfront and assume the sprawling body of water is the St. Johns River. Actually, this is Crescent Lake. And it’s beautiful.

Roughly 13 miles long and two miles wide, the 16,000-acre lake feeds the St. Johns via Dunn’s Creek (see State Park, below). But here at the foot of Central Avenue in Crescent City, it is the centerpiece of the town. Thanks to Florida’s fifth-largest lake and what you’ll find in its waters, the town has proclaimed itself “The Bass Capital of the World” and has enough fish in reserve to host the Rotary Club’s Catfish Festival each April.

The waterfront is, of course, where locals and visitors tend to congregate and enjoy what passes for a commercial district. Few places in Florida capture that kind of lazy Huck Finn-fishing-on-the-river mood like Crescent City.

The City of Crescent City, a small and historic Florida city of around 1,600 residents, sits on the western shoreline of Crescent Lake and the eastern shoreline of Lake Stella. This "City Between the Lakes" offers two public boat ramps to access Crescent Lake and the only public ramp available to access Lake Stella. The freshwater fishing in both lakes is exceptional: bass fishing, crappie fishing, bream, and catfish are in abundance. Crescent Lake's connection to the St. Johns River even brings in shrimp from August through November. Lake Stella has an excellent paddling trail and it also has a public swimming beach where you can spend the day enjoying this spring-fed lake.

In addition to the City's historic charm and its direct access to Lake Stella and Crescent Lake for boating and fishing, there are several ecotourism opportunities in the Crescent City area, including paddling, biking, hiking and horseback riding is places like Dunn's Creek State Park , the Welaka State Forest and Lake George Conservation Area. You will not find better bird watching or wildlife viewing venues for inland Florida. In addition to the opportunities in the nearby state parks and forests, there are bald eagles nesting in the center of the City; sandhill cranes, wood ducks and even limpkins nest along Lake Stella and frequent our public parks; and wild turkeys and peacocks roam the streets of Crescent City.

Dunnellon, FL

The north-central city of Dunnellon lies west of Ocala and north of Homosassa. This small town is located on the Rainbow and Withlacoochee Rivers and bills itself as the Treasure of the Nature Coast. Dunnellon has something to offer everyone: from beautiful Rainbow Springs State Park and the awesome rivers to strolling the lovely tree-lined streets of the Dunnellon Historic District. Spend your days on a riverboat ride, tubing, swimming, kayaking down the river, fishing for that big bass, or shopping for one-of-a-kind gifts at the unique shops and antique stores. Enjoy true old-time charm in Dunnellon.

You'll find the warmest welcome with small-town charm when you arrive in Dunnellon, Florida. Once a wild boomtown created by miners, Dunnellon draws new residents with a variety of water-related sports, fishing, antiquing, homespun hospitality, and a deep appreciation of history and heritage.

Silver Springs, FL

Clearly beautiful! One of Florida's first tourist attractions, Silver Springs is where Florida's ancient and modern history meet. As one of the largest artesian springs ever discovered, visitors have long been captivated by the springs' natural beauty and vibrant clarity. As Florida's oldest attraction, the world-famous Glass Bottom Boats showcase the crystal-clear springs and underwater life that naturally inhabit Silver Springs. See below the surface of the water and enjoy the river's wildlife, vegetation, and historical and cultural artifacts. Relax and explore real Florida paddling in Silver Springs State Park. Kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and canoe rentals are available, including new clear bottom kayaks. Spend a couple of hours paddling along the tree-shaded Fort King Waterway and discovering the springs on the Silver River. Or journey five miles from Silver Springs to Ray Wayside Park with return transportation provided.

Palatka, FL

Palatka is a sprawling city comprised of commercial districts and a web of residential neighborhoods, so a casual drive can become confusing unless you concentrate on a few highlights.

Within the 59-acre park, a 1.8-mile loop encircles twin ravines that are as deep as 120 feet. Students, couples, families, seniors and solo travelers follow the one-way loop in cars, on foot, or on bicycles and stop at scenic overlooks along the way. Steps lead down to the floor of the ravine where a trail parallels the flow of the Whitewater Branch, an underground river that carved the gorge.

For decades this has been one of the city’s most treasured attractions, especially between January and April when flowers (especially azaleas) are in bloom. Seasonal activities such as wagon tours, summer camp, and Eco Adventure Days add to its appeal.

Ships used to moor in the expansive waters of the St. Johns, leaving excursions into Florida’s interior to smaller riverboats. Although those ships set sail long ago, the river has remained.

Capitalizing on this natural asset, between the waterfront and the historic commercial district, several vintage buildings have been restored while sleek waterfront condos have been added. With a wide sidewalk, oak trees, terraced seating, benches, and a lush green lawn, the riverfront park is a popular place for picnics, fishing, a stroll, or simply stopping awhile and settling down with a book (even better, settling down for a nap).
