Madison, FL

The City of Madison, with a population of just over 3,000, was designated as one of the "Best Little Towns in Florida" by VISIT FLORIDA and serves as the county seat for county government. For over 50 years, the city has served as home for North Florida Community College and as an out-campus for St. Leo University. Downtown Madison is filled with quaint gift shops, antique stores, outdoor shops and nice eateries. And all of the downtown area is overflowing with classic 150 to nearly 200-year-old homes and buildings.

About as far north as you can go in Florida, Madison exudes Southern hospitality. A walking tour of Madison reveals antebellum architecture and a mansion used as a Civil War hospital. In the heart of Madison’s historic district is the Four Freedoms Park, which features a memorial that was dedicated on the anniversary of Florida’s endorsement of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Located just north of I-10 about midway between Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Madison is surrounded by farms that still grow tobacco but also other crops. Just outside of town, trails and rivers appeal to cyclists, paddlers, and divers.

Mayo, FL

Mayo is the county seat and happens to be the largest town in Lafayette County, because from Airline to Hatchbend every other place is an unincorporated community. But don’t confuse ‘largest’ with “active.” Mayo is still a sleepy Southern town where Spanish moss dangles from old oaks and a stately old courthouse sits at the center of town. Built in 1908 as the third county courthouse (the first burned down and the second was moved across the street), the grand building is as picturesque as any in Florida. It’s always a treat to find these architectural classics. You’ll see them in these rural county seats, in places like LaBelle, Dade City, Inverness, and Live Oak -- each built nearly a century ago and each a far cry from the functional, utilitarian look of today’s government buildings.

As in other rural counties, you’ll have to dig a little deeper to find activities appealing to travelers, but natural springs, riding trails, and down home festivals are there if you look.

Northwest of Mayo, turn right onto C.R. 292 and a few miles down the road you’ll reach the south entrance of Lafayette Blue Springs State Park. There are nearly a dozen Blue Springs in Florida, but probably none look more like an old-fashioned swimmin’ hole than this. Tree limbs droop into the water, spare clothes hang from branches, and laughter fills the hollow that creates the spring. A natural limestone bridge separates the pools where, on one side, folks are jumping into the 72-degree waters from muddy banks while on the opposite side swimmers ease in and follow the flow into the Suwannee River just a few feet away. The Suwannee holds such an exalted place in Florida folklore it’s easy to forget that, at its essence, it’s really a natural recreational attraction. Today people come to this stretch of the river because a swimming area has been created along its banks and a floating dock provides convenient mooring for jet skis, pontoon boats, and ski boats. Muddy trails and thick woods enhance the park’s authenticity, and on the opposite bank, a few houses camouflaged by vegetation create a lazy scene that brings to mind Stephen Foster’s classic tune.

Wewahitchka, FL

The City of Wewahitchka is located in the Florida Panhandle, in northern Gulf County. With a population of approximately 1,800 citizens, the city is best known for two of its unique assets; the Dead Lakes and Tupelo Honey.

The city's Seminole Indian name means "water eyes", and a view from the sky above reveals why -- two almost perfectly round lakes nestled into the heart of this community add to the community's relaxed charm, and make a special backdrop to the city's downtown Lake Alice Park. The Dead Lakes offer some of the best freshwater sports fishing in the nation, and a unique opportunity for nature photographers. Bass anglers regularly travel to this area to lure, then wrestle one of the "big boys" out of the cypress tree stumps that give the lake its name, and nature photographers join other outdoor lovers to capture a glimpse of this hauntingly beautiful body of water.

Gulf County home of award-winning beaches, fantastic places to stay and an authentic atmosphere that lives and breathes vacation any time of the year. With family focused events, predictably sunny weather and sun-soaked excitement for all ages, the welcome mat is always extended! Gulf County is widely known for its white sandy beaches, sapphire blue waters, fishing, and fresh seafood. While here, we expect you to have some fun! Give way to the appeal of barefoot walks along pristine beaches and sugar white sand, build a sandcastle, cast a rod and create your own fishing tales, fit in 18 holes of golf, enjoy a great meal in one of our locally owned restaurants. Whatever your desire, Gulf County is proud to serve up a beach bag full of fun, from exciting attractions and water sports to eco-excursions.

And, it is our pleasure to share it all with you! Just 45 minutes from neighboring Panama City, Port St. Joe provides a genuine vacation experience in a relaxed, inclusive setting, enticing visitors to come back, time and time again.
