Bronx, NY

The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. Coextensive with Bronx County, it was the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. Located north of Manhattan and Queens, and south of Westchester County, the Bronx is the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland.

People all around the world know the Bronx as the home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden—not to mention as the birthplace of hip-hop. Look deeper and you’ll discover the quaint maritime village of City Island, the cultural attractions of Fordham and Belmont, aka the “real Little Italy,” centered on the restaurants and cafés of Arthur Avenue. Grand Concourse, in the South Bronx, is full of art deco marvels.

About one-fifth of the Bronx's area and one-quarter of its land area is given over to park land: about 7,000 acres. Nearer the borough's center, and along the Bronx River, is Bronx Park. Its northern end houses the New York Botanical Gardens, which preserve the last patch of the original hemlock forest that once covered the entire county, and its southern end the Bronx Zoo, the largest urban zoological gardens in the U.S.

Education in the Bronx is provided by a large number of public and private institutions, many of which draw students who live beyond the Bronx. The New York City Department of Education manages public non-charter schools in the borough.

Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn offers attractions for every type of traveler. Want to be on the cutting-edge? Head for Williamsburg, where you can hear live music every night and shop for vintage threads. If you want to root for the home team, there’s pro hockey and basketball at Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn. Traveling with kids? Prospect Park and the stroller-filled sidewalks of Park Slope beckon, as does the area’s restaurant scene. And since the best things in life are free, consider a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge or along the scenic Brooklyn Heights promenade. Brooklyn's many exciting neighborhoods, packed with cultural institutions, restaurants, and shops, make the borough a top New York City destination. Downtown Brooklyn provides the perfect starting point for experiencing an eclectic area full of energy and brimming with culture. It's centrally located streets serve as an introduction to the surrounding neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, BoCoCa, DUMBO, Fort Greene, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Williamsburg, and Bushwick—all a short train ride or walk away.

Visitors staying in Brooklyn Heights will be drawn first to its photo op–friendly streets of impeccably restored row houses and a spectacular view of the Lower Manhattan skyline from the newly revitalized Brooklyn Bridge Park. But let yourself wander and you'll find a vibrant neighborhood with thoughtfully curated stores, innovative restaurants, and such energetic cultural institutions as the Brooklyn Historical Society, Bargemusic and the New York Transit Museum. The Heights wears its rich history on its sleeve, with stately architectural styles, august churches and schools and literary landmarks.

Bordered by Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, and Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn is truly at the center of it all. The area is a hub for businesses, but it’s also a place to relax and enjoy Brooklyn's arts, culture and entertainment offerings. Classic brownstones dovetail new modern structures and several college campuses bring a lively student population to the area.  For those looking for arts and entertainment, outdoor space MetroTech Commons is the site of exhibits, performances, and special events. Downtown Brooklyn is also home to low-key restaurants, delis and coffee shops where locals drop in for Shake Shack's celebrated burgers, fries, and beverages or a sweet slice of cheesecake from Junior's. From here, the best of Brooklyn is right at your fingertips.

When people think of Brooklyn, typically what comes to mind is Park Slope: leafy streets lined with historic brownstones, intimate eateries with Manhattan-caliber menus and kid-friendly parks and playgrounds. The neighborhood also offers a wide-ranging live-music scene, where you can see everything from emerging indie acts at the cozy Rock Shop to established rockers at The Bell House. Along Fifth Avenue, the neighborhood's main shopping district, you can seek out vintage clothing, affordable fashion from local designers and a range of trendy footwear.

Woodside, NY

Woodside is a residential and commercial neighborhood in the western portion of the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered on the south by Maspeth, on the north by Astoria, on the west by Sunnyside, and on the east by Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. Some areas are widely residential and very quiet, while other parts, especially the ones around Roosevelt Avenue, are busier.

With adventurous art, international cuisine, gorgeous parks and world-class sporting events, Queens features attractions to satisfy nearly every taste. Sports lovers can watch the New York Mets play baseball at Citi Field and, in a venue nearly adjacent, see the US Open host the world’s best tennis players. But in Queens, every day can be an event, whether you’re sampling the delectable Greek cuisine of Astoria or authentic Chinese food in Flushing. View inventive art at MoMA PS1 and Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, and take in the stunning flora at the Queens Botanical Garden.

Staten Island, NY

Visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore Staten Island, renowned for its museums, historic landmarks, beaches, and parkland—including the City’s largest forest preserve in the Staten Island Greenbelt. Reach NYC’s southernmost borough on a free ride aboard the Staten Island Ferry, an attraction in its own right.

Take in a baseball game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark; experience a slice of colonial life at Historic Richmond Town; and visit Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, with exhibits that pay tribute to local maritime heritage. Right outside the Ferry Terminal, is Staten Island's Downtown.

With its bustling atmosphere, vibrant community, and cultural attractions, the community of St. George is a great place for you to explore. Instead of returning directly to Manhattan, take the time to eat at one of St. Georges many great restaurants, explore its museums, or watch a ball game!

Staten Island's restaurants feature cuisines from all around the world. From German beer gardens to "Little Sri Lanka", there are dining options for all tastes! And of course, no visit to Staten Island would be complete without a slice of our famous pizza! Nestled in the northeast corner of Staten Island, close to the terminal for the Staten Island Ferry, Little Sri Lanka is a small neighborhood with an outsize culinary reputation. Go there to sample a few of the restaurants and markets serving authentic dishes—like roti, sambols, and baked goods—representative of the island nation’s cuisine.

Staten Island is the perfect place to get back to nature, just outside the "concrete jungle"! There are miles of hiking trails, three public golf courses, six kayak launch points, and thousands of acres of parks for you to explore. With over 170 parks, it's no wonder that Staten Island is called "The Greenest Borough". There are more than 12,300 acres of protected parkland - that's more than one-third of the Island's total land mass! For sheer variety, our parks cannot be beaten. There is ice skating at Clove Lakes, and swimming at South Beach. Go horseback riding at Clay Pit Ponds State Park or bird watching at Mount Loretto Nature Preserve. Traditional parks with playgrounds and ball fields are complemented by vast forests and passive parkland. Just minutes from Manhattan, Staten Island's rustic retreats have something for everyone!

Since the 19th Century, Staten Island's Eastern Shore has been a haven for tourists and beach bathers. The pride of the shoreline is the South Beach Boardwalk, which stretches almost two miles! Called "The Riviera of New York City," the recently restored Boardwalk area boasts new playing fields, fun fountains, and a clean, lifeguard manned beach, making it a popular destination for the whole family. The 835-foot Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier is one of the longest in New York City. Comfort stations, a shady gazebo, snack bars and a restaurant also dot this beautiful expanse which boasts fantastic vistas. During the summer, South Beach comes to life with concerts, Back to the Beach festivals, and other great events.
