The vision of the UW Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is to improve the health of the people of Wisconsin and the nation through leadership in family medicine education, clinical practice, research and community service.
To fulfill this vision, we will:
-Develop and maintain exemplary family medicine educational programs for medical students, resident physicians, physician assistants, other allied health professionals, faculty and practicing physicians that train healthcare providers for Wisconsin.
-Provide comprehensive, high quality, cost effective and humanistic healthcare in our family medicine clinical education centers through interdisciplinary cooperation.
-Promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge important to teaching, clinical practice and the organization of healthcare.
-Work in partnership with individuals, community organizations and governments to address unmet primary care needs through education, community service and contributions to innovation and change in healthcare delivery systems.
-Provide a nurturing educational and work environment where creativity is encouraged and diversity is respected.

The City of Portage and its surrounding areas, make up a community rich in natural amenity and history. Our historic downtown district serves as a charming backdrop for today’s shoppers with some specialty stores and nice places to dine or relax with a cold beverage. The north side of town offers larger retail chains and some nice dining options as well.
The Portage Center for the Arts is dedicated to the cultural growth and enhancement of those living in Portage and the surrounding area, by providing a community venue for the arts. The center hosts a variety of theatrical events and art exhibits including the Performing Arts Series, the Zona Gale Young People’s Theatre and the Gale Singers. The Portage Area Community Theatre Group is a group of community members dedicating to bringing theatrical performances to our community. Theatrical projects take place at many times throughout the year while helping to enhance the quality of life of residents. The Portage Community School District also supports the arts by offering theatrical and musical performances. In addition, you will find a seven-screen movie theater, Portage Theatres, in the heart of our downtown showcasing many movies.
The Portage Park & Recreation Department provides year-round activities for the whole family, including fitness classes, softball, baseball, volleyball, basketball, martial arts, soccer, and tennis. Plus, 15 City parks offer a variety of amenities, such as athletic fields and courts, spaces for picnicking and grilling, playground equipment, boat landings, nature walking, and plenty of open play areas.
Having fun on the water is a favorite warm-weather pastime for residents and visitors. Boaters hit the waters of the Wisconsin River and swimmers enjoy a day at Silver Lake Beach in Portage, which offers a wide, sandy beach, wading, swimming and diving opportunities for the whole family. Many outdoor enthusiasts enjoy canoeing or kayaking the Fox River. Drop in at the Agency House and paddle up to Governors Bend and points farther north for a great summertime adventure. Swan Lake, located just three miles east of Portage, is a great place to waterski, tube, cast a line or relax. When you need a break, find a table on the deck overlooking the beautiful lake at North Shore restaurant and enjoy have a delicious lunch or dinner.
Biking enthusiasts have a great reason to come to our area and explore Columbia County. We have recently completed a map featuring 14 different bike loops that use the scenic roads of our county to offer bicyclists a wealth of natural views of wetlands, valleys, rivers, lakes and wildlife areas. The most avid golfers will find all the challenge they need at several courses in the Portage area. You can try your luck at the 18-hole course at Portage Country Club or the nine-hole course at Saddle Ridge Golf Club.
When the air turns chilly, skiers and boarders in Portage are lucky to have the highly-rated Cascade Mountain just four miles from town. Some of the 36 trails are steep and challenging to any skier, while others are over a mile long and fun for beginners. Getting to the top of the mountain is fast and easy with ten lifts, including the high-speed quad Mountain Top Express chairlift.
Portage is a wonderful place to grow your business and raise your family. The area offers small town charm with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites, next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers.
