Mt. Horeb, WI

The Village of Mount Horeb was given its name by an Englishman, not by the Norwegians, as some “Norsk” people think. George Wright was born in England in 1824. A few months after his marriage in 1848, he was licensed as a lay minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In that same year the Wrights immigrated to America. In 1858, they moved to Blue Mounds Township to a farm home, way out on the prairie, about a mile and a half northeast on Military Road.

Escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and come to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, where the trolls play! Whether you’re visiting or just biking through, our trolls are waiting to meet you and guide you on an offbeat adventure. Numerous attractions and rich Norwegian heritage are sure to delight. Plan a day trip to discover our many hidden treasures, including casual cafes, gourmet restaurants, delightful bakeries, a world-class brewpub, award-winning wineries, scenic bike trails and so much more. You’ll quickly fall in love with our small-town charm and hospitality present in our museums, shops and events. Stay a little longer at a local motel, inn, bed & breakfast, cabin, vacation rental or campground.

Just minutes west of Madison, nature sets the stage for things to do outdoors in every season, from hiking to skiing to strolling leisurely through town or one of our beautiful parks. Bring a camera and capture photos of our rolling hills and stunning vistas that form the backdrop for a four-season recreation lover’s dream come true. The fall season is a magical time around here. Fall color tours begin here in our rolling hills and vast skies. As the snow begins to fall, the vistas become an outdoor paradise for those that love to snowshoe, winter camp, cross country ski, and downhill ski at any one of our state and county parks in Wisconsin. And don’t believe what you hear about trolls: Our trolls love kids, so be sure to have your family’s picture taken with our magical friends.
