Los Angeles County has the largest population of any county in the nation, exceeded by only eight states.  More than 1 million of the 10.4 million residents live in unincorporated areas, whose municipal services are provided by the County. The other 9.3 million live in 88 cities, located throughout a 4,084-square-mile area. We are a diverse county, with more than 140 cultures and as many as 224 languages.

Los Angeles County residents and visitors have access to a vast array of cultural and recreational opportunities. In addition to all the attractions offered by the private sector, the County has a number of world-class facilities including the Music Center, Hollywood Bowl, Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, the Ford Theatre, and Marina del Rey. The County manages 87 regional and local parks, 344 miles of horse and hiking trails, 19 golf courses, 31 public swimming pools, and 25 miles of beaches.

The County operates and manages 20 beaches stretching along 25 miles of the County's pristine 75-mile mainland coast. It also owns and manages Marina del Rey, the world's largest and most modern small craft harbor, home port to more than 5,000 pleasure boats. The County also manages Dockweiler RV Park, the only beach recreational vehicle campground in the County. Beautiful Santa Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast, is only one hour away by boat or 15 minutes by air. Besides the normal beach activities, there are glass-bottom boats and undersea tours on a semi-submarine.
