Set against a backdrop of forest and farmland, the Waltham area is a colorful patchwork of cities, small towns, modern residential communities, 19th-century neighborhoods, historical and industrial landmarks. The region includes some of the Boston area’s most established communities, one of its earliest industrial centers, and the latest in high-tech industrial development. As the nation’s seventh largest metropolitan area, Waltham is an economic, political, and cultural center for Massachusetts as well as New England.
The area consists of winding country roads and modern expressways that connect the Waltham West Suburban region to Greater Boston. Waltham, the main urban center, is nine miles west of Boston. It is a historical repository of America’s industrial revolution, a vital community with a rich ethnic heritage, and one of the nation’s highest concentrations of electronic and space technology industries. Weston, three miles to the west, is a quiet community of tree-lined streets and comfortable homes that began to attract wealthy Bostonians early in its history. Just north of Weston is Lincoln, a rural town that thrives in its natural setting and country charm.
We have a variety of venues to experience arts and entertainment throughout the city. The Concerts on the Waltham Common is a free concert series held during the summer months every Tuesday. Brandeis University and Bentley College host several events throughout the year. The Brandeis University Concert Series, featuring 60 concerts each year ranging from classical to world music to jazz, The Leonard Bernstein Festival of Creative Arts, an annual event of four days of concerts, plays, and art exhibitions, Bentley College Performing Arts Series includes theatre, music, dance, and lectures, and The Rose Art Museum is an educational and cultural institution dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting the finest of modern and contemporary art. Other entertainment options include the Embassy Cinema, Reagle Music Theatre, The Hovey Players, and more.
Waltham is located in the Greater Merrimack Valley, just a half-hour drive to the north and west of Boston. No matter what the season, the Valley has a beauty all its own. The changing seasons add to the vibrancy of the region and with these changes come certain unmistakable attractions - skiing, biking, fishing, canoeing, white water rafting, strawberry picking, hayrides and concerts under the stars. There is an undeniable spirit in the Greater Merrimack Valley - the same spirit that gave birth to our country.
Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the Greater Merrimack Valley has the sport for you. Enjoy watching some of the best professional baseball north of Boston, or see the UMASS Lowell Riverhawks in action. Take a ride down Class IV rapids on the mighty Concord River, or strap on your skis and test your skills on the slopes! If golf is your thing, we’ve got that, too.
