Adams County is designated as a Primary Care, Dental and Mental Health Professional Shortage Area, as well as a medically under served Population area. The general service area of 1,365 square miles is home to approximately 3,500 residents.
Council is a community located in west central Idaho, about 130 miles northwest of Boise and 35 miles southwest of McCall and situated along the broad Weiser River valley. Council is the county seat of Adams County. According to the 2013 US Census the population of Council is 805 people, while Adams County has a population of approximately 4,000.
Council is located at an elevation of 3,000 feet, surrounded by timbered mountains. The view through the crystal clear air is beautiful in all directions. Cuddy Point to the west rises up 7,715 feet and Council Mountain to the east reaches 8,126 feet.
The climate is seasonal, with an early spring, short hot summer, a beautiful fall, and moderate to severe winter depending on the year. Following spring rains, the wildflowers are a sight to behold, and the winter provides plenty of snow for skiing and snowmobiling.
Nearby recreation areas include Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, Payette Lake, Cascade Lake, Seven Devils Scenic Area, Payette National Forest, Salmon River, and Brundage Mountain and Tamarack Resorts.
Council Mountain (Laurel) Hot Springs is a day hike climbing to hidden hot pools in a wooded ravine. Warm Springs Trail is a steep and steady climb above the east bank of Warm Springs Creek, but a canopy of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir shades the way. A few yards downstream, the combined flow of hot and cold currents swirls down a slick waterslide into a bubbly Jacuzzi, and from there down yet another slide into the largest pool.
Recreational opportunities include downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping, all within an easy driving distance. A nine-hole golf course is located in Council, in addition to courses near or in New Meadows, McCall, Payette and Weiser.
