With mountains all around, miles of hiking and biking trails, a river running through it, and national parks nearby, Redding is an outdoor paradise for young and old alike. Cradled by Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen, Redding has 300+ sunny days per year. It's a great place to escape the chill of spring and the gray days of winter, too! Let the good times flow with a visit to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, a great place to kayak, sail, SUP, or just float on your back.
Redding is also home to the famous Sundial Bridge, world-class fishing, and 200 miles of hiking and biking trails for all abilities. Head out on a day-trip to see the bubbling mud pots and boiling lakes in Lassen Volcanic National Park, or get refreshed by the waterfall at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. This 129-foot gusher is considered one of the most beautiful in the state. Also, be sure to find out what fun events are happening— like the Redding Marathon, Kool April Nites, Shasta Lemurian Classic, Give Me Wings Century ride (one of the most challenging in CA!) and the Salmon Festival (Forbes ranks Redding as the only West Coast city among the Top 10 fishing destinations in North America). Redding is the perfect destination for "Any Adventure, Any Day!"
Redding offers great shopping, hundreds of restaurants, and over 2,500 hotel rooms. It's a short two-hour drive to Sacramento, three-hour drive to the magnificent Redwood Coast, and three-hour drive to San Francisco. Redding and the surrounding areas of the Shasta-Cascade offer a wide variety of year-round opportunities including art in public places, history and culture, regional attractions, and theater. Redding is the urban hub of far northern California, and home to the historic Cascade Theatre: a historic landmark and beautifully-restored Art Deco performing arts venue that hosts circuses, humorists, chart-toppers, and everything in between. If you like to live in the past, or just visit it, the Shasta Historical Society has fascinating material in its downtown Redding location, and is a great resource for exploring historical sites around Redding and its outskirts. Stop by the Shasta County Arts Council to browse the latest art exhibits and sign up for a class to make your own masterpieces.
Redding’s famously good weather makes for several patio dining options, including overlooking the Sacramento River, or decide between any of the grab-and-go establishments that make it easy to fill up before your ride, hike, paddle, or run. If your visit to Redding falls in the ‘romantic getaway’ category, our wine bars, lake and river dinner cruises, and fine dining restaurants can help with that. On the other hand, if the whole family is with you, you’ll find Redding’s family-friendly reputation holds up at meal time (and snack time… and ‘But I just fed you!’ time), so whether you’re looking for a tried-and-true favorite or something new and exciting, your food is ready.
Whether you come to Redding for amazing and accessible hiking trails or world class fishing, chances are you’re going to need to do at least a LITTLE dining, shopping, and grooving. That’s where downtown Redding comes in. Just a few square miles of real estate contain historical theaters, live music hot spots, classic and contemporary eateries, and bars and taprooms to cap it all off. Check the Cascade Theatre calendar to see which big names are in town the same nights you are, or scope out the touring acts stopping in at Vintage Wine Bar, or The Dip. Shop fashionably at Dandelion, Carousel, or California Street Shop, seek the unique at Oregon Street Antique Mall, Indwelling, and Bogbean Books and Music, and get a true sense of Redding’s craftsmanship at Enjoy the Store. Plus, with occasional events and festivals taking over downtown streets, you really have to add it to your list of Redding musts.
